Day of The Dead Skull - Oaxacan Alebrije Wood Carving porcupineExceptional Dia De Los Muertos skull wood carving by the very talented Roque family at their workshop Oaxaca. This fantastic skull was expertly carved out of copal wood which is native to Oaxaca and the preferred wood for most carvers in Oaxaca. The carving was very well done with perfect proportions of an actual skull. The jaw was attached with wooden dowels which even allow it to move up and down. A very well done work of Mexican folk art! Expertly carved out of a single piece of copal wood by Jose and given a great form and posture with the front leg slightly raised and head turning back

Thousands of beads were individually placed over a layer of natural adhesive (bees wax mixed with pine resin) to create this work of art

Time to complete: 14 months

This piece represents the life and death which is inevitable in every living being that has a heart
