They began to be made after the invention of friction matches, or vestas, around the 1830 40s. Nowadays they can make gorgeous little keepsakes. Hallmarked in Birmingham in 1888 by Colen Hewer Cheshire who worked in Northampton Street in the city's historic Jewellery Quarter, this vesta case is an exquisite example of the artistry
